This website has now evolved to be a vehicle for me to experiment and develop my ideas at a depth that keeps them fresh and engaging for myself and many others who maintain contact with me. Some people see me currently and talk about these ideas in therapy or in supervision in my private practice. Others use it to stay connected years after graduation or completion of therapy. In this way the website facilitates my leadership in an expanding network of people sharing a common base of ideas.
My thinking in all of these activities is grounded in Bowen theory. My engaging interest in recent years has been to understand language and self, from systems theory, incorporating research in brain function. My goal in all my work is to ground my thinking in what is real and practical. Though much of this thinking is very abstract, the result of pursuing it, is often a very understandable and practical way forward from daily struggles in life. What emerges are openings. |
Thomas J. Schur
I am a Family Systems Therapist and a Social Worker. I still maintain my private practice, that began over 40 years ago, but now on a limited basis. I taught in the School of Social Work and in the Marriage and Family Therapy Program as a faculty member at Syracuse University for over 30 years, but have recently retired.
In the School of Social Work, I regularly taught the Family Systems Theory course and one of the core Clinical Practice courses. In the Marriage and Family Therapy Program I taught one of the required Clinical Practice courses and supervised student interns in the clinic maintained by the program. |
